Mission StatementBurma Relief Network is a
non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through
health care, medical education & training, safe water supply and relief & development programs in
the Southeast Asian nation of Burma/Myanmar. Established in 2008 by a network of physicians and professionals, BRN is a private, voluntary, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization. Its mission is improve the quality of life
in Burma through health care intervention and related activities .
History
Although BRN is based in the US, all the founding members of BRN
have lived for long periods of time in Burma, and nearly all have extensive
experience working in medical clinics in rural townships like those affected by
Nargis. They have many family, friends, and contacts in Burma's healthcare
sector.
After seeing the deadly impact of Cyclone Nargis in the delta region, the founders of Burma Relief Network
decided to bring together their unique knowledge of the country, contacts, and
medicine to coordinate and provide medical relief efforts.
US members of BRN are in constant contact with a highly trusted and
experienced team of physicians on the ground in the Burma delta region.
Members of this team possess many years of work experience in rural delta areas
and INGOs and have the utmost capability in emergency medical care.
BRN is a non profit public charity organization incorporated in North Carolina. BRN
is exempt from Federal Income tax under section 501(c)(3) of IRS code.
Contributions to BRN are tax deductible under section 170 of the IRS code. BRN
is also qualified to receive tax deductible bequests, devises, transfers or
gifts under section 2055, 2106 or 2522 of the Code.
Current Projects
Burma has long had one of the worst healthcare systems in the
world. The ineffectiveness and numerous problems of this system have
only been compounded by Cyclone Nargis. Burma Relief Network aims to
tackle the country's issues of healthcare inequity and inefficacy one step at a
time. Through healthcare and basic health and sanitation education
to at-risk populations and the flexibility and mobility to respond quickly to
emergency situations, BRN rehabilitates populations devastated by health
maladies and helps bring them back to self-reliance.
BRN partnered with a network of physicians and
healthcare professionals inside and outside Burma to provide effective and
immediate medical care after cyclone Nargis. Depending on foreign aid negotiations and the
possible arrival of larger NGOs and establishment of camps for survivors, we
estimate that our medical field teams will operate on a regular basis in the delta
area for approximately next 12 months.
Since there is in need of safe water supply for a long run,
BRN has been drilling deep tube wells in strategic villages of BOGALE township of the
Delta area.
As the health situation after Nargis begins to stabilize, BRN plans to
establish and staff permanent medical clinics in different
townships of the delta area.
BRN has a project to donate used medical equipments including
patient monitoring systems, ventilators, medical supplies and hemodialysis
machines to public hospitals especially affected by cyclone Nargis in 2009.
